WEEKLY EVENTS: April 25, 2014 – May 1, 2014

Denver.  I am headed to Detroit this weekend to shoot some video of a national weatherization conference (hashtag jealous much?)  I’ve never been to the Motor City before and am looking forward to it.  Have you been?  If so, gimme some recs on (veggie-friendly) places to eat, places to drink, and things to see.

Friday, April 25 & Saturday, April 26, 2014 @ 9:30pm: Mile High Sci Fi Presents: The Last Action Hero at the SIE FilmCenter

The premise behind Mile High Sci Fi is that a really bad movie is shown and local comedians make fun of it, a la MST300.  The humor is clever and inappropriate, with some of the greatest audio gags I’ve ever heard [insert boner noise here].  Come check-out this weekend’s rendition of The Last Action Hero, with special guests Nathan Lund and Sam Talent!  9:30pm both nights; tickets run $7 – $10.

Friday, April 25, 2014, doors at 10pm, show at 10:30pm: The Grawlix Ep. 38 with Heller, Posner, Gardenswartz, Monroe at the Bug Theatre

Super funny super team delivers stand-up, sketch comedy, and hilariously polished videos at the Bug.  This month’s show is jammed with talent, including special guests Jules Posner, Noah Gardenswartz, Matt Monroe, and headliner Emily Heller.  Come laugh before you wake up crying on Saturday morning, trying to piece it all together.  Doors at 10; 10 bucks to get in; come early or be denied (and then what are you going to do, huh?)

Friday, April 25, 2014 @ 9pm – 2am: Lipgloss with JD Samson at the Beauty Bar

Beautiful babies of Denver, come dance it out at one of Denver’s favorite indie rock dance nights, Lipgloss, featuring DJ Hollow, DJ Tower, and special guest, JD Samson!  JD Samson is best know as one-third of punk/electroclash band Le Tigre, and as the leader of band/art collective/remix project, MEN.  She has toured world-wide playing clubs & museums and has performed with acts like Peaches & The Gossip.  JD is heavily involved in promoting LGBT & feminist causes and is recognized as an important voice for both.  Tickets to see Local Natives and Bombay Bicycle Club will also be handed out around midnight.  $7 pre-sale.

Friday, April 25, 2014 @ 9pm – 2am: One Year Anniversary Party with Holy Ghost! at NORAD Dance Bar

More dance options!  Join HOME as they celebrate one year of house parties in D-town with special guest DJs Holy Ghost!, along with w/ Sam Warren and Keepers.  $18 in advance, $20 day of. Free parking in the west lot, corner of 22nd Street & Champa Street.

Saturday, April 26, 2014 @ 12 – 10pm: Grand Opening at Comrade Brewing Company

Come and celebrate the grand opening of Comrade Brewing Company on Saturday, April 26th.  They will be open from noon until 10pm.  Wikipita will be there at noon to serve up some amazing Mediterranean-style pitas.  Brewery tours will be given on the hour.  Six beers will be on tap, including Blonde Ale, Irish Red, Cream Stout with Coffee, India Pale Ale, Pale Ale, and a very special collaboration Cascadian Dark Ale.  They’ll also have apparel to buy and growlers to go.

Saturday, April 26, 2014 @ 1 – 5pm: Root 40 MusicFest Parking Lot Party at Argonaut Wine & Liquor

Huge outdoor day party held in conjunction with the Upper Colfax Root 40 MusicFest and hosted by Argonaut Wine & Liquor, Deep Eddy Vodka, and Breckenridge Brewery.  Live music, vendors, a huge beer and vodka garden, food trucks, live art, and more!  Music performances by Alterity, The Outfit, Hydrogen Skyline, Intuit, and Cold River City. Sunday, April 27, 2014 @ 10:30am: Horror Brunch at The Stanley Hotel

Hold on to your forks while chief brunch coroner, Andrew Novick serves up an experiential, horror-themed brunch!  Normal Ones + Mark Hosler of Negativland will be providing the musical accompaniment, with horror film soundtrack music and live/improv sound effects/soundscapes.  This brunch will also serve as the venue for the Stanley Film Festival awards.  Tickets to the Horror Brunch run $30 – $35.  Please note: Last year this ish sold-out, so get your tickets now!

Tuesday, April 29, 2014, doors at 7pm, show at 8pm: Open Screen Night with Artface Studios at the Oriental Theater

Think of Open Screen Night as a monthly open mic night for short form video.  And this month, OSN’s favorite subversive puppeteers, Artface Studios, are taking over the show!  Guest judges include Patrick Sheridan from Denver’s longest-running, locals-only, independent film showcase The Emerging Filmmakers Project; Casey Elliott, Co-Director of the Intendence Film Festival; and Zach Eastman from the upcoming web-series, Local Brew.  Submit your work for a chance to win awesome prizes!  Doors at 7pm; $5 admission.

Wednesday, April 30, 2014 @ 6pm: Evening Yoga at Denver Botanic Gardens

Looking for a new environment to practice your yoga skills this spring?  Well how about amongst the natural setting of the Denver Botanic Gardens?  The Denver Botanic Gardens is now hosting a weekly Vinyasa yoga class, taught by Blake Burger.  Vinyasa yoga weaves beautiful movement with challenging postures, and cultivates a sense of peace and calm by the end of each yoga class.  All levels are welcome; please bring a mat, a towel and water.  $10 members, $12 non-members.  Please bring cash if possible but credit cards are also accepted.

Thursday, May 1, 2014 @ 6 – 10pm: Fruit Jar Series – May Day Derby Dance Party at The Sidewinder Tavern

Starting at 6pm, come join the horsey happy hour with $1 tacos, $2 beers, country music in the air, and horse racing on the tube.  At 7:30pm there will be some dance lessons, at 8pm old time square dancin’ with Sidecar Stringband, and then at 9:30pm couples dancing with live music.  Flamboyant derby hats and pastel-colored attire is encouraged.  No experience necessary; no one is required to dance.  No dress code or partner needed.  Anyone can dance with anyone regardless of gender.  Only $5 to have fun.
