WEEKLY EVENTS: July 11 – July 17, 2013
Hello Denver. Today is my mom’s birthday. I can’t believe she has gone this long without strangling me (I can be really annoying). My mom is wonderfully patient, extremely considerate and really fun. She loves Denzel Washington movies, playing little practical jokes on people, sending random (but thoughtful) packages, acknowledging others, making treats, and convincing people to play games. (She’s also really good at paddle ball and four square). I see glimmers of her in myself. And that makes me happy.
July is almost halfway over y’all. Now is the time to get out and explore. Pick an event that maybe normally you wouldn’t attend and go for it. Just cuz. Highlights this week include: high fashion in LoHi, a free rooftop party with music AND comedy, an open bar dance party, summertime Spanish happy hour, a pop-up block party, a vegan kickstarter party, an authentic German beer garden festival, AND a new Illegal Pete’s. Also, be sure to check-out the Westword’s 10 things to do for $10 in Denver blog for free/low-cost events this weekend. Fortune favors the bold my friends.
And PS, happy birthday Ginny!
This Thursday, the fashionistas of Goldyn will be bringing another round of haute couture to LoHi, this time via the Elizabeth and James eyewear and jewelry trunk show.
Thursday, July 11, 2013, doors at 6pm, music at 7pm: Raise the Roof at SIE FilmCenter
Combining music, comedy, beer, food, increased altitude and sweet ass views, the Denver Film Society’s Raise the Roof parties are a summertime must. There is no cover and attendees will be given a buy–one-get-one free movie ticket, that they can use upon a return visit to the film center. Held on top of the film center parking garage, this week’s entertainment includes music by The Blue Rider and Esme Patterson, along with comedian Adam Cayton-Holland. Can you say, “TGIAF”?
If you like any combination of tequila, hot dogs, kick-ass music, and free stuff, then you’ll want to be at the Larimer Lounge this Thursday night. In The Whale, FLASH/LIGHTS, and Hollagramz will be kicking out the jamz. FREE admission. FREE Olmeca Altos tequila. FREE Biker Jim’s Gourmet Dogs. Free rhymes with me. You must RSVP to attend.
Friday, July 12, 2013 @ 4 – 10pm: 17th annual Biergarten Festival in Morrison, Colorado
Looking to get out of town, but not too far out of town? Check out this festive celebration featuring authentic German food, music, dance and beer, in the beautiful setting of Morrison. Bring your friends, bring your kids, bring your new boyfriend’s kids – it’s a good time for all. Can’t make it Friday night? Festivities will take place on Saturday and Sunday as well.
A neighborhood celebration, featuring pop-up shops, food, music and beer. Vendors include: Small Room Collective, Brick & Mortar General Store, Indy Ink, coast to coast vintage, Hazel & Dewey, Paper Plates Press and Waffleganger. Kick-off your weekend right – RiNo-style. Sponsored by The Denver Passport (have you seriously not gotten one yet?)
For years I have been saying I wish there were some sort of dedicated vegetarian/vegan “fast-food” option in Denver. Someplace that is quick, delicious and healthy. Now there are definitely some places in town where you can pull that off, but they aren’t necessarily that way by design. Enter Buddha’s Belly, which is currently running a Kickstarter-esque campaign to make this happen. Donate online or better yet, attend this party to show your support in bringing a new raw vegan restaurant to town. Food, drinks, prizes and dancing will be on tap. Free entry!
Do you speak Spanish or kind of speak Spanish? Have you been looking for an opportunity to practice? Then dust off those tildas and head on over to Hooked on Colfax this Friday night to have some summer-inspired drinks, roll your Rs and make some new amigos.
Fancy Tiger is turning 7! After 7 years on Broadway Fancy Tiger has seen it all. They’ve seen 5 different locations combined, moved one block North from South Broadway to Broadway, changed zip codes and had a lot of fun in the process. Join them on Saturday, July 13th from 10am-7pm for an all day celebration and some awesome stuff for you:
– free limited edition FTC shopping totes with any purchase over $20 (limit 1 per customer)
– free downloadable anniversary mix
– free stickers
– new FTC limited edition t-shirts available for purchase
– sweet tunes by local DJs all day
On the second Saturday of each month, Buntport presents you with three stories related to a theme. This month’s theme is: Celebrities in the 1990s Who Got Hit in the Head with Things (yes!) Two of these tales are true, but one of them is nothing but a fib. Can you figure out which one is baloney? Come hear some stories, name the one you think is untrue, and they’ll let you know if you’re right. Fun for all ages (seriously grown-ups, this is an event that both you and your kids will enjoy), cute contests and prizes to boot. Tickets are $6 – $8 with $1 off if you dress as a duck or something pretending to be a duck. (So in other words, whatever you were planning to wear that day anyway.)

The weekend is not over! Come shake your hot queso, while watching the ever-amusing Parlor Pickers.
From #startuppatio: In Denver, we feel there’s a disconnect within the startup community. It’s time to fix that…and what better way than with small, casual group chats? Think great outdoor conversations with other startup founders (startup in this sense = ANY kind of small business, not just tech), beer/wine/coffee/drink of choice. We limit the number of attendees to keep that cozy atmosphere going and so everyone gets to meet everyone else! RSVP here.
Everyone in the food community seems to be in great anticipation of this event. From Wednesday, July 17th through Saturday, July 20th, Ian Kleinman (of the Inventing Room) will be selling limited-edition gourmet donuts at the Biker Jim’s downtown location. Varieties include: Bananarama, Baklava, Almond Joy and others. Want to pre-order your dnuts? Use this form.
For a whopping 10 cents, you’ll experience a Sasquatch crossing guard, campfire beer garden, camp song sing-a-long, a photobooth, new art exhibits and one of the best rooftops in town.
Wednesday, July 17, 2013 @ 7pm: Sci-Fi Film Series at SIE FilmCenter
Science fiction feeds the imagination and helps us to explore possible futures, our hopes and fears, and the unfolding of technologies. Join Museum scientists and Vincent Piturro, English and film professor at Metropolitan State College of Denver, as they screen famous sci-fi films and lead discussions to break down the science behind these alternative possibilities, and separate fact from fiction. This week’s screening features the film Primer, with a discussion led by with space scientist Ka Chun Yu.
