WEEKLY EVENTS: August 2 – August 8, 2013
According to Wikipedia, August 7th marks the midpoint of summer. That’s it kids. After the 7th, there will be less days of summer than there were. But don’t let that get you depressed. Let it get you motivated! Enough relaxing, time for some maxing. The summer of 2013 is not fully yet defined. There are still ice cream cones to be licked! Picnics to be nicked! Veggie burgers to be flipped! Pools to be crashed! Patio beers to be swapped! Booty shakin’ to be shook! Midnight kisses to be stolen! Late-night bike rides to be had! Even later-night slices to be devoured! Walk of shames to be trekked! And memories to be made. Denver…let’s do this.
Come on out for a night of fun, food trucks, drinks and music. Hosted by the Rotary Club of Five Points, this event will raise funds for a bike giveaway in two local elementary schools to help increase school attendance. Stop by the party to help a good cause while checking out all the nearby RiNo First Friday happenings—including The Matchbox’s special extended happy hour until 9:00pm! Beer provided by Beer by Design and Strange Brewing Company.
These are extreme photographs by Andrew Novick, all featuring models and their own blood – fun! Read more in this week’s Westword interview with Andrew.
Join the Dikeou Collection for their fifth installment of their Family Saturday Workshop series. This month’s workshop will focus on the artist collective known as The Royal Art Lodge. The Dikeou Collection is home to a large group of collaborative drawings done by members of the Royal Art Lodge, and they have also had their creative projects featured in four issues of zingmagazine. Visitors participating in the workshop will be supplied with materials to create their own “exquisite corpse” drawings and collages with family and friends. This workshop is free to attend and no RSVP is required. Music and snacks will be provided to keep the collaborative spirit lively.
Featuring: Dirty Few, Zebroids, PIZZA TIME, Ned Garthe Music, Colfax Speed Queen, The Blue Rider, The Octaves, Champagne Charlie, Best Creeps, The Born Readies, Mount Babel & The Ramblers, Dude Babes, Head Injuries and more! Beers, Booze, Babes, Water Balloons, Kissing, Squirt Guns, Games, Weed, Food Trucks, Art, Venders, Live Artists, Bikes, Dancing, Face Painting, Dogs, and you. 18+ event; only $5.
Saturday, August 3, 2013 @ 9pm – 2am: fresh produce at the Meadowlark
The Sidewinder Tavern could very much be your new favorite bar. This neighborhood watering hole boasts live music, great drink specials, wood paneling, free pool, and friendly bartenders. Come on out to this Globeville destination bar and LOL with the comics from the Fine Gentleman’s Club. Only $5 – no bar is too far.
Luche Libre! Comedy! Music! 18+ event; $10 entry.
Screw cooking in this heat. Every first Tuesday of the month, Root Down offers a gourmet 4-course raw vegan dinner for $39/person. Peep the menu here – yum!
Enjoy classic horror flicks under the moonlight on the patio at Crash 45. Each film in this series centers around youth, freedom and a deliberate or non-deliberate decision to separate from “normal” society. Movie-themed drink specials and fun souvenirs to take home! All films start around 9PM, but come early for a seat and/or to order food. This month’s film is Near Dark (1987) – The best vampire Western ever made, starring 3/4 of the cast of Aliens.
Wednesday, August 7, 2013 @ 7pm: Chomp: Rawgust at City Park
Chomp is yet another great event in town that makes me say, “I effing love this city”. For just a $8 – $10 donation, enjoy a heaping plate of delicious vegan food, based on the chosen monthly theme, which this month is Raw. UPDATE: They’ll be at City Park this month instead of Cheesman, toward the intersection of 17th and York at the picnic tables just north of the fountain. Bring your friends, blankets, picnic chairs, frisbees, furry friends, and some cash for either soda or beer.
The Greater Than Social Club is my most favorite monthly series. Combining music and comedy in Lannie’s basement cabaret setting, this event will make you straight-up pumped to be a Denverite. This month’s line-up includes comedy by Kristin Rand, music by Ark Life, and hosting services provided by Andrew Orvedahl. The entire show will be over by 10pm, so quit your hemming and hawing and just buy a ticket already, geez.
Thursday, August 8 through Sunday, August 11, 2013: Close Encounters Of The Animated Kind
Close Encounters of the Animated Kind is the Denver Film Society’s newest four-day festival celebrating contemporary animated film from across the globe. New work from eight different countries feature a diverse range of cinematic styles and themes, from stop-motion to anime, live-action-animation-hybrids and packages of Oscar-winning shorts. Pick and choose your films or see all eleven films for only $35 (Denver Film Society Members) or $40 (non-member).
