Denver!  These last few weeks have been cray.  I feel like I am on a runaway roller coaster – eeeeeeeooooooooow!  This week’s events are a bit sparse, but I will add more this weekend.  Just wanted to make sure I kept my weekly commitment to y’all.  Check back for more fun and in the meantime, Look – no hands – eeeeeeeooooooooow!

Friday, November 22, 2013 @ 11am – 9pm: Opening Day of the Denver Christkindl Market at Skyline Park

European quaintness in the heart of BroDo?  Yes, it’s true.  Skyline Park has once again been transformed into a traditional German Christmas Market.  German music, big beers, a heated beer tent, Gluhwein, soft pretzels, Christmas knickknacks, and twinkling lights will round out this festive experience.  Peep their website for daily hours and entertainment.

Friday, November 22, 2013 @ 7 – 9pm: Black Sheep Fridays at the MCA Denver

Mixing hip with the weird, Black Sheep Fridays runs weekly October 11–December 20, 2013, from 7 – 9pm in the MCA Café.  Visitors can stop by anytime during the evening to experience the fun.  This week’s theme is Invasion of the Podcast People: Taylor Gonda and Kevin O’Brien from These Things Matter Podcast and Josh Mattison from Bad or Not Bad discuss the wide world of podcasts.  Free for members, $5 for regular people.

Saturday, November 23, 2013 @ 1:50pm, 4:35pm & 7:20pm: American Promise at SIE FilmCenter

American Promise spans 13 years as Joe Brewster and Michèle Stephenson, middle-class African-American parents in Brooklyn, N.Y., turn their cameras on their son, Idris, and his best friend, Seun, who make their way through one of the most prestigious private schools in the country. Chronicling the boys’ divergent paths from kindergarten through high school graduation at Manhattan’s Dalton School, this provocative, intimate documentary presents complicated truths about America’s struggle to come of age on issues of race, class and opportunity.  Winner of the Jury Award at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival.  Director Joe Brewster in-person for all three screenings.

Saturday, November 23, 2013 @ 6pm: Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Party at Crash 45

The Day of the Doctor is upon us, and who better to spend it with than other Whovians?  Come celebrate the greatest sci-fi hero in the universe with a screening of the 50th anniversary episode; costume contest for best Doctor, best companion and best alien; Doctor Who-themed snacks and drink specials; Doctor Who paraphernalia, and a brit pop dance party.  It’s a timey, wimey, night of Whovian fun!  And, no cover!

Saturday, November 23, 2013, doors @ 6pm, show @ 7pm: Denver Music Summit Presents: The Narrators at the McNichols Civic Center Building

The Narrators: Stories from the Road, hosted by Andrew Orvedahl and Robert Rutherford, with stories from Dessa, Scott Booker, Jeff Linsenmeier (The Czars, The Fray), Erin Roberts (Porlolo), and Yonnas Abraham (BLKHRTS). Followed by live  music performances from David Bazan (Pedro the Lion), Will Johnson and Erika Wennerstrom (Heartless Bastards).  It’s like This American Life, but right in front of your smiling face!  Tickets are just $10.

Monday, November 25, 2013 @ 5:30pm: Public Hearing on Ordinance Regulating Consumption of Retail Marijuana at the Denver City and County Building

This upcoming Monday, there will be a one-hour courtesy public hearing on two ordinances concerning public consumption of retail marijuana in the City of Denver. The hearing will take place during the meeting of the City Council, which begins at 5:30pm in the City and County building located at 1437 Bannock Street, in Council Chambers on the 4th floor.  To sign-up to speak, please see the Council Secretary for a speaker card during the Council recess.  Each speaker is allowed 3 minutes.  Click here for more information on the ordinance.

Whet your Thanksgiving appetite with a night of amazing local comedy, music and burlesque!  This pre-holiday show will feature the musical stylings of the Gin Doctors, Harpoontang, and Flashbulb Fires, along with comedy from Adam Cayton-Holland, Chris Charpentier, and Kristin Rand.  A burlesque performance from Laura Stokes will round out the evening.  Tickets are just $5!  Get it.

Tuesday, November 26, 2013doors at 7pm, show at 8pm: Last Open Screen Night of 2013 with Total Ghost at the Oriental Theater

Think of Open Screen Night as a monthly open mic night for short form video.  And this month, for the last Open Screen Night of the year, Total Ghost will be taking over, and bringing with them a panel of funny ha ha judges: Andy Juett, Nathan Lund and Timmi Lasley.  Submit your work for a chance to win; submissions are accepted starting at 7pm.  If you’re submitting a film, be sure to check out the new submission guidelines.  $5 admission.  Let the fun begin!

Black Shirt Brewing Co introduces BYOV – Bring Your Own Vinyl on Wednesday evenings at the brewery.  Bring in your best vinyl records, buy a beer, and they’ll spin your tunes. BYOV runs from 5pm to 9pm every Wednesday night.  Staff reserves the right to veto any album – so bring a few selections just in case!

Wednesday, November 27, 2013@ 8pm: Frenchie’s Souper Fundraiser at the Monkey Barrel

You don’t have to work tomorrow…so what should you do?  Well how about attend a soup cookbook fundraiser?  (Duh.)  This event will include one of my favorite cold-weather pastimes – soup, along with live music, burlesque, booze, and a silent auction.  It’s how the Pilgrims would have wanted you to throw down.  $10 goes towards the publishing of local burlesque performer (and professional home cook) Frenchie Renard’s soup cookbook.

Come give thanks and save the turkeys!   The vegetarian/vegan menu includes: Organic Tofu Turkey with Stuffing, Organic Curd Turkey with Quinoa and Grain Free Grain, Mashed Potatoes with Gravy, Sweet Potato Casserole, Cranberry Chutney, Broccoli Delight, Butternut Squash Soup, Organic Corn Bread, Pumpkin Pie, and Pumpkin Mousse.  Dinner is $15.95 for adults, $8 for kids under 12 years old, and free for kids under 5 years old.
