Denver!  I am headed out of town this weekend to kick it in Salida, but I leave you in good (well-moisturized) hands.  This week, plan on attending a pickle party, indulge in indie film, eat chocolate, learn how to Lindy Hop, shop local, play trivia, rally your community, and listen to some opera.

Friday, April 3 – Sunday, April 5, 2015Double Trouble in Denver at the SIE FilmCenter

The Denver Film Society and SIE FilmCenter present a weekend of double trouble with their favorite dynamic duo, bi-coastal filmmakers, Mike Ott and Nathan Silver.  This event will celebrate independent film and kick-off Ott & Silver’s co-directed cinematic takeover of the Mile High City this summer for their project, “The Untitled Denver Project”.  View the films in this program here.

Friday, April 3, 2015 @ 5 – 9pm: Address Your Stress Fest at the Chocolate Crisis Center

This first Friday, come down to RiNo to sample chocolate, enjoy some spa-inspired cocktails, and partake in a mini massage, all in the name of de-stressing!  FREE.

From the folks that brought you TheBigWonderful comes the all-new Friday Night Bazaar.  And if you haven’t been, you are seriously missing out.  Imagine a festive farmhouse (at least that’s how it feels to me), filled with twinkling lights, delicious homemade food, craft beer and cocktails, artisan vendors, soulful music, swing dancing, and a food truck garden.  Come shop, sip, and eat.  No cover; great way to start your weekend!

Friday, April 3, 2015doors at 7pm, singing at 7:45pm: First Friday w/ Opera Colorado at the Armstrong Center for Dance

Join the First Friday revelers and experience a night of unforgettable art and music!  Opera Colorado’s world premiere of The Scarlet Letter in May 2016 features innovative and amazing costume and set designs, including projected scenery and minimal set pieces.  Mill around with nibbles and drinks, check out the designs and listen to selections from the opera, putting everything into context.  The event is being held in the Colorado Ballet’s gorgeous new facilities in the Santa Fe Arts District.  This event is FREE (but bring some bucks for the cash bar!)

Friday, April 3, 2015 @ 7 – 10pm: Lindy Hop & Libations at the Infinite Monkey Theorem

Swingin’ Denver and the Infinite Monkey Theorem will be offering a night of FREE swing dance lessons, live music from Andrew Vogt, and vino set against the backdrop of RiNo’s First Friday Art Walk.  Come learn some steps while you have some sips at Denver’s hippest urban winery.  No cover.

Friday, April 3, 2015, doors at 7pm, show at 8pm: Open Music Sessions with High Five at Denver Open Media (DOM)

This First Friday visit YOUR community access television station for a live, in-studio performance by High Five and a joke-telling set by Kevin O’Brien.  Additionally, there will be FREE food from Illegal Pete’s and beer from Ratio Beerworks!  This event is FREE and open to the public.

Saturday, April 4, 2015 @ 12 – 4pm: Family Saturday Workshop at the Dikeou Collection

The Dikeou Family Workshops are a great way for people of all ages to learn more about contemporary art and experiment with new creative processes.  This month’s workshop will focus on Dutch photographer Sebastiaan Bremer’s unique style of photo alteration, and materials will be provided for participants to paint, draw, and etch upon a variety of vintage photographs to create their own Bremer-inspired artwork.  This workshop is FREE to attend and no RSVP is required; drop-in anytime to participate.  Light refreshments will be provided.

Saturday, April 4, 2015 @ 7 – 11pm: Brittany Gould Opening Reception at Leon

Join Leon for the opening reception and exhibition of Swells; sculptural installations and drawings from Brittany Gould.  Brittany will be flying in from Berlin, Germany to make an appearance at Leon for the night of April 4th specifically for this show.  FREE.

It’s an all-new monthly dedicated to the funky side of disco, 80’s boogie, and modern funk!  On The One is hosted by resident Dj Mike Moses and will feature special guest DJs each month, starting with Dj Diligent.  Plan on popping by this new night for some funky beats.

Saturday, April 4, 2015 @ 9pm: Mile High Soul Club w/ guest DJ Fred Schneider at Syntax Physic Opera

After a residency that lasted just shy of 2 years at Beauty Bar, Denver’s Mile High Soul Club has moved down South to Syntax Physic Opera for an even sexier experience.  This week, DJs Tyler Jacobson and Steve Cervantes will be joined by Fred Schneider of B-52s fame.  Get your dancing shoes ready and come shake what your mama gave you.  Tickets are $10.

Murmur of the Heart displays the lighthearted (but never trivial) side of Louis Malle’s work.  The story is about a boy  and his mom.  The mom accompanies her son to a health spa where he is to be treated for a heart murmur, which is both literal and metaphorical.  The film is a marvel of humor, sweetness, emerging sexuality and a remarkable mother/son relationship.  No one would make such a film now; come see why.  Tickets to this classic film are only $1!  Hosted by Denver film critic Howie Movshovitz.
