WEEKLY EVENTS: April 29, 2016 – May 5, 2016

mobile_2x-c539936ccf02065dDenver! Tomorrow AM I am headed out to San Francisco, which is why you are getting this a day early – hooray!

Am looking forward to hanging with my brother, drinking some West Coast brews, eating good food, taking a bay cruise, seeing Humans in concert, and walking around until my feet are bloody stumps.

But I leave you in good hands…lip sync battles, art parties, weird-o comedy, record store openings, seed exchanges, bike gatherings, nerd battles, and writing workshops are yours for the taking.

Read on for more fun times this week and for additional free/low-cost events this weekend, check out Westword’s 10 things to do for $10 in Denver blog.

Saturday, April 30 & Sunday, May 1, 2016 @ 11am – 5pm: Free Weekend at the Kirkland Museum of Fine & Decorative Art

Although not quite as well-known as some of Denver’s other museums, the Kirkland may very well be my favorite. This unique, neighborhood gem is filled to the gills with really cool (yes that is a technical art term) furniture, paintings, lamps, glassware, ashtrays, and animal figurines. It’s funky and eclectic and while there is a lot of stuff to look at, you won’t get overwhelmed halfway through. This is the last weekend until the Kirkland moves to its new location in the Golden Triangle, so be sure to stop by and bid adieu…for FREE!

Saturday, April 30, 2016 @ 10am – 12pm: Seed Library Open House at Ross-Broadway Branch Library

Bring some seeds, take some seeds – come to the Ross-Broadway Branch Library today to learn what the Seed Library is all about. Participants will also learn how to create wildflower seed bombs! FREE.

Saturday, April 30, 2016 @ 10am – 5pm: Denver Handmade Homemade Market at the National Western Complex

The HAHO is a place where you can find local, high-quality arts, crafts, food, and one-of-a-kind products made by your neighbors and friends here in Denver. This is by far the biggest HAHO ever, with 100 vendors, music, entertainment, food, beer, and over 800 alpacas? Yup, this event will be held in conjunction with The Great Western Alpaca Show. They will be around all weekend, complete with fiber arts, auctions, competitions, and ample amounts of fluffy goodness! This event is FREE.

Saturday, April 30, 2016 @ 12 – 5pm: Opening Party at Recollect Records

Come celebrate Denver’s newest and baddest record store, Recollect Records with Dj Red C and Felix Fast4ward. FREE.

Saturday, April 30, 2016 @ 1pm & 3pm: Duck Duck Dupe at Buntport Theater

On the final Saturday of each month, Buntport presents you with three stories related to a theme. Two of these tales are true, but one of them is nothing but a fib. Can you figure out which one is baloney? Fun for all ages (seriously grown-ups, this is an event that both you and your kids will enjoy), cute contests, and prizes to boot. Tickets are just $6 – $8, with $1 off if you dress like a duck. (So in other words, whatever you were planning to wear that day anyway.)

Saturday, April 30, 2016 @ 9pm: Weird Touch Dance Party at Syntax Physic Opera

Ditch the limelight, forego the scene, and explore the delightfully dimly lit corners of your city. Weird Touch is a sophisticated all-vinyl dance party collaboration offering an eclectic, yet cohesive mix of darkly tinged nu-disco, indie dance, and weird house. With DJs Fancy Matthew and Shannon von Kelly, $5 gets you to your happy place.

Saturday, April 30, 2016 @ 10pm: Heavy Traffic at the Sie FilmCenter

One night only! It’s animated, but it’s not a cartoon. It’s funny, but it’s not a comedy. It’s real. It’s unreal. It’s heavy. Tickets run $7 – $11 and plan on coming early for an adult coloring contest and naughty drink specials!

Sunday, May 1, 2016 @ 12 – 8pm: Vinyl Sundays with the Denver Kush Club at Spangalang Brewery

Bring in your favorite vinyl for a spin on Sundays. It’s a dollar off full pours all day and the Denver Kush Club will be giving out free joint cards for those who partake. As always, delicious snacks will be available from ZIVIX Five Points.

Sunday, May 1, 2016  @ 1pm: Tattered Cover Classic: Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence at the Sie FilmCenter

In 1942, British soldier Jack Celliers (played by David Bowie) comes to a Japanese prison camp. The camp is run by Yonoi, who has a firm belief in discipline, honor, and glory. In his view, the allied prisoners are cowards when they chose to surrender instead of committing suicide. This is certainly not your typical Christmas movie! Hosted by Denver film critic, Howie Movshovitz, tickets to this classic film are only $1!
