WEEKLY EVENTS: February 28, 2014 – March 6, 2014
Mine is pretty good. But one thing that would make it even better [brace yourself for shameless begging] is if you told your friends about Dear Denver! And even better yet, have them follow my every move on the Facebook and the Twitter net. You know, stalker-style. That way everyone gets invited to the party. (Except for maybe that one guy I saw on the bus yesterday. Actually let’s not tell him; he was CREEP-PEE.)
Peep the list below for some funny, raw, vegan, horrific, and Shakespearean events, and you Denver…I’ll see you round the way…
(And as per youzh, check-out Westword’s 10 things to do for $10 in Denver blog for free/low-cost events this weekend.)
The premise behind Mile High Sci Fi is that a really bad movie is shown and local comedians make fun of it, a la MST300. The humor is clever and inappropriate, with some of the greatest audio gags I’ve ever heard [insert boner noise here]. Come check-out this weekend’s rendition of The Fifth Element! 9:30pm both nights; tickets run $7 – $10.
Friday, February 28, 2014, doors at 7pm, show at 8pm: Weirdo Olympics with Nikki Glaser, David Gborie, and much more! at the Oriental Theater
Nikki Glaser and David Gborie join Ben Kronberg, Sam Tallent, and Kevin O’Brien for an amazeballs night of comedy. (Seriously, I have been excited for this one since it was announced.) Tickets are just $15 and include a FREE LARGE PIZZA at Sexy Pizza’s new Jefferson Park location. Haaaaaaay…18+.
With Bob Denerstein as your host, join Starz Denver Film Festival Director, Britta Erickson, film critics Walter Chaw and Christian Toto, and last year’s Oscar ballot winner, Mary Watson as they predict the winners of this year’s Oscar race! Enjoy a cocktail, purchase an Oscar ballot, and sit back and listen to the experts hash it out. This event is FREE and open to the public in the theater lounge.
The most soulful dance night in town; always an absolute packed house. Free before 10pm, $3 after plus free parking at St. John’s Cathedral, 1350 Washington Street.
Tonight’s event will include Ben Roy and special guests bringing the funny. Chella Negro, Nathan Lund, and Adam Cayton-Holland will be crowning Miss Globeville – Lady of the Dive Bar. There will be some beautiful ladies that will be strutting their stuff. Music by Glenn Ross, Chella Negro & the Charm and Mike Marchant. A silent auction will be held with gift certificates to Fancy Tiger, Buffalo Exchange, Illegal Pete’s, Watercourse Foods, Bang! Salon, Three Little Birds Salon, and a Ravi Zupa print! The first 20 attendees will receive a massage gift certificate so come early to party. Donations collected at the door.
This Saturday, Channel Z will be presenting a 35mm print of A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddie’s Revenge at the Alamo Drafthouse Denver. Collectible buttons, killer goodies, and a discussion by Keith Garcia on the gay subtext of this forgotten sequel. Tickets are $11.
Come out and enjoy the Oscars with your friends at The Oriental Theater! This is a FREE event with live comedic commentary by Denver’s own Fine Gentleman’s Club and special guest comedian (and one of my personal faves) David Gborie. Drink specials and contests to boot!
Bring your own games or play some of the ones on-site! Meet new people, get a little competitive. $12 pitchers of select drafts.
Illegal Pete’s has been an ongoing community supporter here in Denver for years now. One could even say that they help make-up the cultural fabric of Colorado. And this Sunday, if you come to any of the Illegal Pete’s location repping something Colorado-related (sports, cities, bands, colleges, etc.) and you purchase an adult entree, you will receive a FREE order of chips and queso – what? what? And if you take a photo of your CO-inspired gear, hashtag it with #303day and they will pick a few winners who will win Illegal Pete’s gift certificates.
Looking for a way to balance out your boozy, pill poppin’ lifestyle? Every first Tuesday of the month, Root Down offers a gourmet 4-course raw vegan dinner for $39/person. Please call ahead for reservations and mention you are coming for the Raw Food Menu, as seating is limited. And check-out the menu for this month – yum!
Enjoy classic horror flicks inside the bike-themed interior of Crash 45, along with movie-themed drink specials and fun souvenirs to take home! All films start around 7:30pm, but come earlier for a seat and/or to order food. This month’s film is Cat’s Eye (1985) – A stray cat links together three vignettes of horror and suspense written by Stephen King. Meeeeeee-ow!
Fresh City Life is setting the stage for the Bard’s big birthday. This April will mark the 450th anniversary of the birth of William Shakespeare and they’re getting a jump on Bill’s big day by celebrating all March long with films (and other great events) that highlight the contributions of Shakespeare to literature, stage and, well, just being human. See four of the best screen adaptations of Shakespeare plays with their host, classically trained Shakespearean actor and writer, John McDonald. FREE.
Come on out for some country dance partying and community gathering. 6 – 7pm dinner & happy hour with country music on tap; 7:45pm basic cajun dance tutorial; 8pm couple dancing (two-step, waltz) with Bon Tee Cajun Band; 9:15pm short & sweet square dance lesson with Pat Tognoni; 9:30pm old time square dancing with Firing Line String Band. No experience necessary. No one is required to dance; it is a social event. No dress code or partner needed. Anyone can dance with anyone regardless of gender. $5 suggested donation.
I can’t do this Facebook event rant justice. But do come out to this new comedy night hosted by Greg “Dust Him Off” Baumhauer, and laugh along with some of Denver’s best: Adam Cayton-Holland, Troy Walker, Jordan Doll, Jim Hickox, Bobby Crane, and Christie Buchele. FREE.
