Friday, February 13, 2015 @ 6 – 8pm: Black Sheep Fridays at the MCA Denver

Mixing hip with the weird, Black Sheep Fridays runs weekly January 23 to March 27, from 6 – 8pm in the MCA Café.  Visitors can stop by anytime during the evening to experience the fun (happy hour runs from 5 – 7pm).  This week’s theme is Speed Metal Dating, where guests can participate in speed dating to black metal music.  Free for members, $5 for regular people.

Friday, February 13, 2015 @ 6pm: MUTINY 3D at Cabal Enterprises

With MUTINY as the central theme, 35 international, national, and local artists have produced black-and-white original artwork in a wide range of styles.  These works of art brut, realism, digital mania, twisted comics, and expressionist filth have been curated and adapted into detailed red/cyan 3D by newest Cabal member, Adam Stone.  Come one, come all.  Drinks provided by Sailor Jerry.  FREE.

Friday, February 13, 2015 @ 9pm – 2am: Lipgloss at the Beauty Bar

Beautiful babies of Denver, come dance it out at Denver’s favorite indie rock dance night, featuring Hollow and DJ Tower.  This is the only event where you can lose it to Neil Diamond, Bloc Party, Queen, The Supremes, Iggy Pop and LCD Soundsystem all in one night.  To sweeten your evening, there will be $1 PBRs and $3 wells from 10 – 11pm and they’ll be giving away tickets to see Ariel Pink around midnight.  Free before 10pm, only $5 afterwards.  Life is short; go to Lipgloss.

On the second Saturday of each month, Buntport presents you with three stories related to a theme.  This month’s theme is: Love Stuff!  Two of these tales are true, but one of them is nothing but a fib.  Can you figure out which one is baloney?  Fun for all ages (seriously grown-ups, this is an event that both you and your kids will enjoy), cute contests, and prizes to boot.  Tickets are just $6 – $8, with $1 off if you dress as a duck, or something pretending to be a duck.  (So in other words, whatever you were planning to wear that day anyway.)

This Sunday, hide from your weekend regrets with the Alamo’s Vampire Brunch, featuring one of my most favorite films-o-the-year, A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night.  This event features a vampire-inspired brunch menu (duh), 2-for-1 mimosas, and a special in-theater musical performance starting at 11am.  Tickets cost $12.50.  Vampire Brunch occurs every 1st and 3rd Sunday of the month.

Monday, February 16, 2015  @ 7pm: Finding Vivian Maier at the SIE FilmCenter

One night only – nominated for the Best Documentary Feature Oscar!  Now considered one of the 20th century’s greatest street photographers, Vivian Maier was a loner who worked as a nanny most of her life and shot photos constantly everywhere she went.  Amateur historian John Maloof bought the contents of her storage locker by chance at an auction and soon became obsessed with trying to learn more about the mysterious recluse.  Go see this film.  Tickets run $7 – $10.

The Great Debate pits teams of non-experts head-to-head, toe-to-toe, and often dumb-to-dumber in lively debates of the inconsequential.  Mundane topics are brought to life by ordinary, but opinionated folks.  You’re bound to be a flip-flopper after listening to compelling arguments on things that never mattered.  This month’s theme?  Alexander Hamilton vs Aaron Burr.  Box office opens at 7:30pm, and the feud starts at 8pm.  $5 – $8, depending on your luck, or reserve your spot ahead of time.

At my mother’s house in Springfield, PA, there are stacks of dusty journals, chronicling my journey of trying to “figure shit out” while growing up.  Since then, the world has become much more public and although I no longer keep a journal per say, I am compulsed to share what I am thinking at any given time via Facebook.  Luckily there is an event which celebrates the old-fashioned way of processing the world around us, and it’s called My Teenage Angst.  Still have access to your old journals?  Email reader@myteenageangst.com to be a part of the show or just show-up and listen.  FREE (but bring some cash for cheap cans-o-beer).
