Dear Denver, this week’s events are coming to you a day early because I am in Central Ohio for work, experiencing below zero temps and I want to get this posted before the internet freezes. But you Denver, luckily you’ve got bigger and better things to distract yourself with this week (along with the big snowstom blowing into town). Miami Vice! PechaKucha! An artisan market! The Oscars! FREE comedy! Independent film! Affordable music shows! Annnnnd we’re all going back to prom! Hooray!

Friday, February 20, 2015 @ 6 – 8pm: Black Sheep Fridays at the MCA Denver
Mixing hip with the weird, Black Sheep Fridays runs weekly January 23 to March 27, from 6 – 8pm in the MCA Café. Visitors can stop by anytime during the evening to experience the fun (happy hour runs from 5 – 7pm). This week’s theme is Miami Vice President, where guests can enjoy a table reading of Miami Vice by Joe Biden and Dick Cheney impersonators. Free for members, $5 for regular people.
Friday, February 20, 2015, doors at 6pm, presentations at 7pm: PechaKucha at the Beauty Bar
If you’ve never heard of PechaKucha, it is an event where presenters get 20 slides, any content, and 20 seconds to explain each slide – so 6 minutes and 40 seconds in total. Come fill your brains (and maybe even your hearts) with interesting talks from leaders in the design, art, and architecture industries. Plus! FREE pizza from Benny Blancos while supplies last. This event is FREE, but reservations are requested and you must be at least 21 to attend.
Friday, February 20, 2015 @ 7 – 10pm: Fresh Jazz and Crisp Vinyl Series at the Dikeou Collection
The Dikeou Collection’s latest installment of the Fresh Jazz and Crisp Vinyl Series will feature a very special performance by The Annie Booth Trio. Musician John A. Díaz-Cortés will compose a special DJ set inspired by Dikeou Collection artist, Giasco Bertoli’s vinyl-themed artwork. This event is FREE and open to the public; light refreshments will be provided.
Friday, February 20, 2015 @ 8pm: The Doom Room at the 3 King’s Basement
Watch as awesome local comedians (and secret out-of-town guests) scramble to come up with sets on the spot, based on suggestions from the patented “screen of doom”. Always wild, always a party. Guests include Xander Kreed, Amy Miller, Matt Monroe, Ryan de la Garza, Cody Wayne Hurd, Ben Bryant, and more! FREE.

Beautiful babies of Denver, come dance it out at Denver’s favorite indie rock dance night, featuring Hollow and DJ Tower and guest DJ Randall Erkelens. This is the only event where you can lose it to Neil Diamond, Bloc Party, Queen, The Supremes, Iggy Pop and LCD Soundsystem all in one night. Plus! Come to the winter installment of the Denver Handmade Homemade Market (HAHO). The Handmade Homemade Market (HAHO) is a place where you can find local, high-quality arts, crafts, food, and one-of-a-kind products made by your neighbors and friends here in Denver. Event also includes live music and homemade food. By creating a micro-business incubator that is warm, participatory and lively, the HAHO hopes to make a difference in a country of vast income inequality. FREE.
Saturday, February 21, 2015 @ 7pm – 12am: Fire & Ice Prom at Syntax Physic Opera
LUPEC Denver is proud to present Fire & Ice Prom 2015, their 7th annual event to benefit the Prom Dress Exchange, a local non-profit that offers provides gently-used formal wear to students who otherwise would not be able to afford to attend prom. Guests are asked to bring any unneeded formal wear, shoes, and accessories to the event, which will include soul music (DJ Tyler Jacobson of Mile High Soul Club), dancing, cocktails, and fun. A Prom King & Queen will be announced, along with Best Dancer and Best Dressed. Attendees can also help the charity by purchasing corsages, boutonnieres, photo booth pictures, and silent auction items. The suggested $10 donation cover will also go directly to the Prom Dress Exchange.

The February Sexpot Monthly Showcase is sure to be a real humdinger as the Reformed Whores from Brooklyn will be in the house to play some funny tunes! Comedians Amy Miller (Portland), Ryan De La Garza (Omaha) and Cody Wayne Hurd (Omaha) will also be bringing the funny. Hosted by Jordan Doll and Andy Juett, with pre-show hijinks from Jim Hickox during Sexpot Vision. All for the low low price of 5 bucks, yo!
